Netflix has started testing a new method that makes it difficult for users to share access to an account. This popular practice reduces the cost of Netflix subscription, but is against the rules.

According to Magid’s estimates, approximately one third of Netflix users share the password to their account on the website. Thanks to this, the service is cheaper – the subscription costs are divided between several people. However, as stated in the terms of service, “Netflix and any content viewed on it are intended for personal, non-commercial use only and may not be shared with anyone who is not living in your household.”

Until now, Netflix has not taken any decisive steps to limit these practices. The main difficulty for users was the ability to play only on one device at a time under one profile – under more expensive subscriptions, you can have several profiles on one account, which allows simultaneous playback. Netflix does not limit the number of devices that can be logged in with a single password.

Now the website is reaching for a new way to combat account sharing. As reported by The Streamable portal, some users, when using Netflix on TVs, see a message after turning on the service: “If you do not live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to continue watching”. To continue, verify your account via SMS or e-mail or create a new trial account for 30 days.

This is TV doomed to success. I’ve seen the 75-inch Xiaomi Mi TV Q1 at work.

Xiaomi has so far offered TVs for definitely less demanding customers. The Q1 model is supposed to be the better. Equipment that will satisfy lovers of image and sound quality. It is also suspiciously cheap. But guess what? At first glance, the Mi TV Q1 is not missing anything. Absolutely nothing.

75-inch TV with a QLED matrix, compatible with HDMI 2.1 and for $1200? When this equipment was first announced, I was highly suspicious. Especially that the first Xiaomi TVs that are already on the market, rather – colloquially speaking – did not cut slippers. The most gracious thing you can write about them is that they are properly priced. Cheap mid-to-low-end TV? Xiaomi was a nice choice.

The Q1 model, however, is to be a premium model. Well, at least by Xiaomi standards, because it will be difficult for him to compete with OLED or Mini LED TVs from the Korean-Japanese competition. However, it is available in pre-sale at a price of only $1200. When it enters stores next Monday, the price will increase to $1700. It’s still inexpensive, considering its very high diagonal and theoretical technical capabilities.

Xiaomi Mi TV Q1 75-inch – first impressions.

As soon as the Polish branch of Xiaomi received the first copies that he could show to journalists – I could not miss the opportunity and not watch this miracle live. Please keep in mind that this report has nothing to do with a test or review – this is just the first opinion from the press show. However, I am impressed. Mi TV Q1 is not a device that I would recommend to every consumer. Even at first glance, I saw some shortcomings in the presented materials that are hard to find in the top competition models. However, taking into account the price – I left the show positively surprised.

The very appearance of the TV suggests higher-class equipment. The TV is enclosed in a metal housing, it has very thin, almost invisible frames. It probably also stands on a large, elegant brushed aluminum foot. It definitely has the presence of a high-end product. It may not be the slimmest – but its thickness should definitely be within the tolerance of aesthetes.

I also liked the pilot. Light, firmly in your hand, with buttons made of high-quality material. With a certain and nice click of buttons. It’s hard to find fault with anything.

Mi TV Q1 is definitely impressive in terms of the image.

As I mentioned, it is difficult to talk about a more sophisticated test at the press show. I had a PlayStation 5 connected to a TV and a Netflix account. I caught some problems very quickly – including minor errors in the motion compensation system, which at times showed artifacts for fractions of a second.

It is also difficult to talk about a perfect contrast – the Mi TV Q1 matrix is ​​a FALD type backlight with 384 LEDs and 192 dimming zones. However, the so-called blooming – i.e. the glow visible around bright elements against a dark background – was actually visible only with white inscriptions on a black background, and it was also not particularly glaring.

On the other hand, I was impressed by the other image parameters. The TV in theory provides 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 palette and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. And there are many indications that the promise is fulfilled. The image is bright, clear and homogeneously illuminated.

On this TV, I launched the beautifully filmed miniseries Our Planet on Netflix, mastered in Dolby Vision. And I was even more impressed. The arctic permafrost shots showed every detail on the snow texture right next to the camera – and the bright white showed no discoloration. The Q1 also did great in the jungle scenes – the birds shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow did not prevent the Xiaomi TV from extracting details in shaded places in the frame. I will not say – I was surprised that it is so good.

The TV is compatible with both Dolby Vision and HDR10 +. In addition, according to the technical data, it is equipped with a 10-bit, 120-hertz matrix and HDMI 2.1 connector with ALLM and eARC support. Players may be disappointed with the lack of VRR support, but it is possible that it will be added in one of the future software updates. It is also worth remembering that only one connector supports HDMI 2.1 – the others are HDMI 2.0 with ARC.

The representative of Xiaomi declared at the show that this TV should be constantly improved by the engineers responsible for it. Updates – if necessary – will be frequent and will remove the shortcomings reported by reviewers and users. In theory, therefore, what can be learned programmatically from this TV set may significantly improve in the undefined future. So far, Mi TV Q1 works under the control of Android TV 10 – without the Google TV interface.

Enjoys Miracast support, which isn’t obvious on Android TVs that usually only rely on Chrome.

Apple Watch increases its dominance in the smartwatch market

Influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, global smartwatch shipments in Q4 2020 saw a slight year-on-year drop, making 2020 almost flat, according to the latest Global Smartphone Shipments Tracker report prepared by Counterpoint Research. In a year where annual growth was just 1.5%, Apple maintained its leadership position and grew its share by 6%, helping to shift the entire market towards the premium segment.

New products from Apple, i.e. Apple Watch Series 6 and SE, did very well. As many as 12.9 million units were sold, which translated into a 40% market share in Q4 2020. Samsung increased its share by 1% year on year. The rebound occurred in the second half of the year with the launch of the Galaxy 3 Watch.

There has been a significant shift in the market towards more expensive watches, and premium retailers such as Apple, Samsung, and Garmin have helped sustain the performance of high-end merchandise. Senior Counterpoint Analyst Sujeong Lim said:

The dynamics of price ranges in the fourth quarter of 2020 indicate that the average selling price is increasing. The largest segment in 2019 ($ 101-200) shrunk by 7% points, while the more premium segments of $ 300 and above grew by 8% points, which was greatly helped by Apple with a dominant market share of over 70 % in this category.

The smartwatch market is driven by three premium brands – Apple, Samsung, and Huawei.
